What percentage of the global carbon cycle do the ocean’s hold?

Ocean’s make up 72% of the planet’s surface and 97% of its water. Oceans sequester and absorb a third of the carbon emitted by human activity, roughly two billion metric tons each year. ‘Blue carbon’ (what is referred to as the carbon sequestered by oceans) equates to roughly 83% of the global carbon cycle (human activity and natural resource) at any one time being circulated through our oceans.

Directly investing in the blue economy can be achieved through blue bonds which, among other things can support island and coastal nations to refinance their national debt and create long-term sustainable financing for marine protections, sustainable economic development and climate change. Indirectly, investors can help by investing in the broader water value chain in recycling or purification companies or even improving the utilities that provide our water every day.
