Iron oxide – rust.
Iron-air batteries have a “reversible rust” cycle that could store and discharge energy ten times more efficiently than cobalt or sodium batteries – at one-tenth the cost. Unlike current lithium-ion batteries which require expensive and toxic materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite, the iron-air batteries use iron, the fifth most abundant metal on earth. Not only is iron cheaper it’s also more environmentally friendly.
